Water dispatching of the Grand Canal in northern Jiangsu Province

The Grand Canal in northern Jiangsu Province links up three large river basins between north and south. It is very important for the society with its functions of water, irrigation, flood control, drainage, shipping, and so on. This paper briefly reviews the historical changes of water scheduling of the Grand Canal, and introduces the river harnessing ideas and engineering practices revolving round the functions of the Grand Canal, as well as the present situation and development planning in the future of water scheduling of the Grand Canal. And at last the author analyzes the practical application of the water scheduling of the Grand Canal with examples, providing references for planning and design, management of the inter-basin and cross regional water transfer project.
